Shanghai Xiaolong Bao (小笼包) is a beloved Chinese dish originating from the Jiangnan region, particularly Shanghai. They are delicate soup-filled dumplings made with a thin wrapper that encases a juicy meat filling, typically pork, along with flavorful soup.
How to Cook :
1. Place steamer paper on steamer basket and place dumplings on top of the paper.
2. Ensure water is on rolling boil before you place dumplings (in steamer basket) on top.
3. Steam for 9-10 minutes with lid on.
4. Ensure dumplings is piping hot throughout before consumption.
How to Eat Them:
- Carefully Pick Up: Use chopsticks to gently lift the dumpling without breaking the skin.
- Bite a Hole: Bite a small hole or use a spoon to catch the soup.
- Sip the Soup: Sip the flavorful broth inside.
- Enjoy the Dumpling: Eat the rest, often with a bit of black vinegar and shredded ginger for extra flavor.
They are commonly served with a dipping sauce of Chinese black vinegar and julienned ginger and are a highlight of dim sum or Shanghainese cuisine.
